How We Approach a Dig

Excavation Contractors Allentown handles residential and light commercial earthwork in Allentown and the surrounding Lehigh Valley: site preparation and grading, foundation and basement digs, trenching for water and sewer lines, drainage, land clearing, and demolition with hauling.

Ground in this valley has a habit of surprising people. Much of it sits on limestone, and the Duffield soil series, a silty clay loam that formed from weathered limestone, takes its type location from Lehigh County. Rock can be four feet down on one side of a lot and ten on the other, and the state's own stormwater guidance treats the Lehigh Valley as karst country, where concentrated water and sinkholes go together. So we plan each dig around three questions: where the water will go, what is likely under the topsoil, and what is buried that should not be hit.

How a job runs

  • We walk the site with you, measure, and note access for machines and trucks.
  • We file the PA One Call request (811) within the window state law sets: no fewer than 3 and no more than 10 business days before digging.
  • If the work opens a City of Allentown street or alley, we apply for the Public Works excavation permit, which the city code requires at least three work days ahead.
  • Spoil that can stay on site is reused; the rest is hauled, and the quote says which.
  • Backfill is placed in lifts and compacted, not dumped.
  • If we hit something unexpected, such as ledge rock or a void, we stop and talk with you before the price changes.
