Digging Where America's Cement Came From
Excavation contractors in Whitehall Township work on ground that once supplied much of the nation's cement. David O. Saylor patented a Portland cement process here, his first plant stood between Cementon and Coplay, and by 1914 the Lehigh District around it produced 70 percent of U.S. cement. The reason was the rock: railroad cuts in the township expose Jacksonburg limestone. For a homeowner, that history means limestone is never far down, and digs for basements or deep laterals can meet it.
Villages with their own character
Whitehall is not one place but a set of villages: Cementon, Eagle Point, Egypt, Fullerton, Hokendauqua, Mickleys, North Coplay, Scherersville, Stiles and West Catasauqua. The river villages along the Lehigh have older homes on small lots where alley garages and laterals are the usual jobs. Egypt and Scherersville have more room for additions, pole buildings and longer driveways.
A commercial township
The Lehigh Valley Mall and Whitehall Plaza sit along MacArthur Road, PA 145, the main north-south route, and US 22 crosses the south end. Commercial pads, parking-lot drainage and utility trenches for businesses along those corridors are part of our work here. State routes are PennDOT's, so a new entrance or drainage connection on one needs a highway occupancy permit.
Township roads and drainage
Of the township's 120.85 miles of public roads in 2018, 97.60 were township-maintained. Driveway and lateral work that touches them goes through the township. The Lehigh River forms the eastern edge and drains Whitehall, so yards near the bluffs and creeks need grading that sends water downhill without eroding the slope.
Planning a Whitehall project
The township had 29,173 residents at the 2020 census, and its housing ranges from early cement-era homes in the river villages to postwar neighborhoods and newer subdivisions in the western half. In Hokendauqua, Cementon and West Catasauqua, lots are smaller and older; there, lateral replacements, garage teardowns and downspout lines are common. Farther west toward Egypt and Scherersville, larger lots bring additions, pools and pole buildings.
The Dent Hardware Company Factory Complex in Fullerton and Helfrich's Springs Grist Mill are reminders that much of Whitehall was industrial or agricultural long before it was suburban. Old fill, foundations and farm drainage turn up in digs. We sort spoil as we go so clean soil can be reused and the rest hauled.
Weather
Whitehall's monthly averages at Hokendauqua run from 28.8 degrees in January to 73.8 in July. Ground frost slows winter digging, and spring thaw leaves clay loam too wet to compact well. We schedule grading for when the soil can actually be compacted.
